Originally founded circa 1739, San Jose has served as the nation’s capital since 1823. The Tobacco Factory of Costa Rica was one of the earliest employers, helping to establish an urban presence in the fledgling country. Since its colonial days, Costa Rica has blossomed into a bustling hub of commerce, tourism and artistic expression.

Located within a tropical rainforest, San Jose enjoys a mild climate with temperatures typically hovering between 63 and 86 degrees. The rainy season takes place from May to mid-November, but cloudiness and rainfall still occur on occasion during the dry season.

Costa Rica boasts one of the best education systems in Latin America. San Jose is home to various public and private learning institutions, ranging from pre-school to the university. Many of them are bilingual. San Jose is served by a number of hospitals including CIMA San Jose, which provides an intensive care unit, neonatal intensive care unit, patient and surgical facilities. Juan Santamaria International Airport handles air travel in the capital city.
